Data sheets have been prepared for each plant, giving the plant description, its habitat, the origin
of the name and general data about the plant such as where in the upper bay it was found, and its
frequency in the area. Information as the what the Indians used the plant for is given, its medicinal properties and
other general data found in the texts listed in the bibliography. Also given are the photograph dates, the
earliest date being the date the plant was first found, the name of the person who identified the plant or
confirmed my identification and whether there is a plant specimen.
The Jepson Manual, Higher Plants of California, has changed some family names. Families Agavaceae
and Amaryllidaceae have been included in Liliaceae. The genus Cuscuta has been changed from
Convolvulaceae to Cuscutaceae. The genus Azolla has been changed from Salviniaceae to Azollaceae.
Roberts in his 1998, A Checklist of the Vascular Plants of Orange County California states that
native Orange
County plants in family Amaryllidaceae are now included in family Alliaceae.
The Jepson Manual also combined some plant varieties that I had identified
separately. There are seven of these: Corethrogyne filaginifolia
var. latifolia and Corethrogyne filaginifolia var. virgata have been combined
into Lessingia filaginifolia var. filaginifolia; Cryptantha clevelandii var.
clevelandii and Cryptantha clevelandii var. florosa have been combined into
Cryptantha clevelandii; Aeonium arboreum var. arboreum and Aeonium arboreum var.
atropurpureum have been combined into Aeonium arboreum var. arboreum; Croton
californicus var. californicus and Croton californicus var. tenuis have been
combined into Croton californicus; Melica imperfecta and Melica imperfecta var.
flexuosa have been combined into Melica imperfecta; Polygonum aviculare and
Polygonum arenastrum have been combined into Polygonum arenastrum; Anagallis
arvensis var. arvensis and Anagallis arvensis var. caerulea have been combined
into Anagallis arvensis. My treatment of each of the combined
varieties is noted in each plant file.
