Isopoda: Paranthuridae

~ 1cm bl. From a mud grab off Shellmaker Island, Upper Newport Bay, Newport Beach, Orange County, CA. 2/9/08. The body consists of a head, bearing two pairs of antennae and a pair of sessile compound eyes; eight thoracic segments, the first of which is fused with the head and the remaining seven bear similar pairs of legs (hence the name isopod); and a very short but distinctly segmented abdomen, carrying several pairs of appendages, most of which have respiratory functions.
