Ford Foundation Fellowships for Minorities  

Deadline: January 8

To foster diversity on the nation's college and university faculties and campuses, the Postdoctoral Fellowships for Minorities Program identifies outstanding researchers and scholars who are members of minority groups whose underrepresentation in the professoriate and in formal programs of postdoctoral study and research in the United States has been long-standing and remains severe as a result of past discrimination. The program enables fellows to engage in a year of postdoctoral research and scholarship in an environment free from the interference of their normal professional duties.  Major disciplines eligible for support include the life sciences, physical sciences, mathematics, engineering sciences, behavioral and social sciences, education, and the humanities. Fellowships will be offered only to individuals who are citizens or nationals of the United States at the time of application and who are Native American Indians, Alaskan Natives (Eskimo or Aleut), Black/African Americans, Mexican Americans/Chicanas/Chicanos, Native Pacific Islanders (Micronesian or Polynesian), or Puerto Ricans.

Awards for individuals with doctoral degrees to obtain postdoctoral research training in Tobacco-Related Disease a under a designated mentor, for up to 2 years at $35,000 per full year. For research regarding tobacco use, with an emphasis on youth and young adults, including, but not limited to, the effects of active and passive smoking, primary prevention of tobacco use, nicotine addiction and its treatment, effects of second hand smoke, and public health issues surrounding tobacco use (See update and interpretation). Application must be prepared by the prospective fellow. Laboratory must be in California. Citizenship: No requirement.

The Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund provides support in the form of fellowships to young postdoctoral scientists conducting research into the causes, origins and treatment of cancer. Fellowships are awarded for three years and carry a basic annual stipend of $25,000 in the first year, $26,000 in the second and $27,000 in the third year, with an additional $750 available for each dependent child. An allowance of $1,500 a year is usually made available to the sponsoring laboratory for the Fellow's research expenses. Candidates in general should not have more than one year of postdoctoral experience. They must hold either the M.D. degree or the Ph.D. degree in the field in which they propose to study or furnish evidence of equivalent training and experience. American citizens may hold a fellowship either in the U.S. or in a foreign country, but foreign nationals will be awarded fellowships only for study in the U.S.

NIH GENOME SCHOLAR DEVELOPMENT AND FACULTY TRANSITION AWARD

Annual Deadline: February 1

An NIH program to enable promising new genome researchers to establish an independent  research program in genomic research and analysis and to secure a tenure-track appointment in an academic institution in the United States.  This is accomplished by providing the necessary resources to initiate an independent research program as a Genome Scholar in an extramural or a National Institutes of Health (NIH) intramural laboratory for up to two years followed by funding of their extramural research program for up to four years at an extramural institution to which she/he has been recruited as tenure-track faculty.

American Cancer Society, National

Deadline: March 1, and October 1

This award is to support the training of researchers who have just received their doctorate. Awards are made for one to three years with progressive stipends of $37,000, $39,000, and $42,000 per year, plus a $2,000 per year institutional allowance. Annually, the Society selects three Fellows to receive the following special awards: the John Peter Hoffman Fellowship to a top-ranked application in any research area and the Ann L. Siegel and Jean and Harold Grossman Fellowships to the two highest ranked applications in breast cancer research. Each of these special Fellowships offers a stipend of $144,000 for a three-year period. Deadline: Applications must be received in the Society's Extramural Grants Department by March 1 or October 1.

*Wills Foundation Neurobiology Postdoctoral Fellowships

The Wills Foundation offers fellowships to postdoctoral fellows interested in the area of neurobiology. Special consideration will be given to those whose work is directly, peripherally or potentially beneficial to understanding Huntington's Disease.

FUNDS: Up to $40,000 per year.

ELIGIBILITY: This funding must be made through U.S. Institutions; however, citizens of another country working in conjunction with a U.S. Institution are eligible for funding.

*Human Frontier Science Program

The Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) promotes international collaboration in interdisciplinary, basic research in the life sciences. The fields supported are Brain Functions and Molecular Approaches to Biological Functions.  Fellowships are available to scientists who wish to work in foreign laboratories, with emphasis on individuals early in their careers.

*Leukemia Society of America

LEUKEMIA SOCIETY OF AMERICA, INC. To advance the understanding, treatment and prevention of leukemia and related cancers.

Fellow: Promising investigators about to embark upon their postdoctoral research training or who have less than two years' experience at the time of review. Proposed research projects must be directly related to leukemia and related diseases. Citizenship: Need not be US citizens.

Special Fellow: Must have completed at least 2 years postdoctoral research and be continuing their research training under the direction of a research sponsor. Citizenship: Need not be US citizens.

 

*Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Awards in the Biomedical Sciences

DEADLINE: October 1

Career Awards in the Biomedical Sciences provide support ranging from $500,000 over five years to bridge advanced postdoctoral training and early years of faculty service.  Researchers may be working in any of the basic biomedical sciences.  Awards specifically targeted for reproductive science will be included.  During the postdoctoral period, award recipients may train at degree-granting institutions in the United States, Canada, or the United Kingdom.  All faculty positions must be taken at U.S. or Canadian degree-granting institutions.  All recipients must complete at least one year of postdoctoral training as part of the award.  The awards provide up to two years of postdoctoral support for awardees with a Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. degree, and up to three years of postdoctoral support for awardees with an M.D. degree only.  All recipients receive three years of support during the faculty appointment.  All candidates must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or Canada at the time of application.  Candidates must have completed at least 12 months but not more than 48 months of postdoctoral research training by the October 1 application deadline.

*Life Sciences Research Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowships

Deadline: October 1

Three-year fellowships will be awarded on a competitive basis to graduates of medical and graduate schools in the biological sciences holding M.D., Ph.D., D.V.M. or D.D.S. degrees. Awards will be based solely on the quality of the individual applicant's previous accomplishments, and on the merit of the proposal for postdoctoral research. Persons doing a second postdoc are eligible only if they are transferring to a different supervisor's laboratory and embarking on a new project not connected to their previous research. All U.S. citizens are eligible to apply with no geographic restriction on the laboratory of their choice. Foreign applicants will be eligible for study in U.S. laboratories.

Studies involve the theoretical, comparative, computational, and/or experimental analyses of biological patterns and processes at the molecular level. *NSF/NATO Postdoctoral Fellowships in Science and Engineering

DEADLINE: December 9, 2003

On behalf of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the National Science Foundation (NSF) invites applications for 12-month postdoctoral research fellowships from beginning scientists, mathematicians, and engineers. Approximately 20 fellowships will be made to US institutions that would like to host a scientist from NATO Partner countries (Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan). Eligible fields of research are: mathematics, engineering, computer and information science, geosciences, the physical, biological, social, behavioral, and economic sciences, the history and philosophy of science, and interdisciplinary areas comprised of two or more of these fields. Research in the teaching and learning of science, mathematics, technology, and engineering is also eligible for support.  U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents are not eligible.

 

NSF International Research Fellowship Program

Deadline Second Tuesday in October  

Objective is to introduce scientists and engineers in the early stages of their careers to opportunities abroad. These awards are available for research in any field of science and engineering research or education supported by NSF. Applicants are encouraged to consider any site that will afford them a unique and beneficial research experience.  Appropriate organizations include institutions of higher education, industrial research institutions/laboratories, government research institutes/laboratories/centers, nonprofit research organizations, and foreign sites or centers of excellence.  Eligible applicants, in addition to being citizens or permanent residents of the United States, must have earned a doctoral degree within six years before the date of application, or expect to receive the doctoral degree by the award date. Women, minorities, and persons with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.  Support may be requested for residence abroad of three to 24 months. The 24-month period may include one year (or some portion of the total duration) at the foreign site and one year (or duration equal to the foreign tenure) used as a "re-entry" year in the United States

American Association of University Women Educational Foundation: Fellowships and Grants

Deadline: November 15

American Fellowships support women doctoral candidates completing dissertations or scholars seeking funds for postdoctoral research leave from accredited institutions. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Candidates are evaluated on the basis of scholarly excellence, teaching experience, and active commitment to helping women and girls through service in their communities, professions, or fields of research. There are no restrictions on the location, field of study, or age of the applicant. Postdoctoral Research Leave Fellowships offer one-year support for women who will have earned a doctoral degree by Nov. 15, 2003.

University of California President's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program  

Deadline: November 15

The President's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program offers postdoctoral fellowships to enhance the competitiveness of outstanding scholars for academic appointments at the University of California and other research universities by supporting them in the conduct of research, and by providing mentoring and guidance towards advancement of their academic careers.  The Program is open to all qualified applicants who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Awards are made without regard to race, gender, or ethnicity.

NSF Minority Postdoctoral Research Fellowships  

Deadline:   December (First Monday in December each year)

The fellowships are designed to permit Fellows to choose the research and training environment most beneficial to their scientific development. This requires a change from the doctoral institution. Eligibility: Member of one of the ethnic minority groups that are underrepresented in science and engineering ie. Native Americans, Blacks, Hispanics, and Native Pacific Islanders. Must have earned the doctoral degree in an appropriate scientific field no more than 4 yrs before the deadline of application, and must have received no more than 2 years of postdoctoral support prior to the deadline. Citizenship: Citizens, Nationals or Permanent Residents of the U.S.
